AB Initio (Beginners) Languages IB at Bridgwater College

Course description

The course is aimed at students with no previous knowledge of the language. The main focus of the course is language acquisition and the development of skills which lead to communicative competence and the opportunity to explore the culture using the language. The language on offer may vary but will be either German or Spanish.

Course content

hrough listening, reading, speaking and writing in a range of registers you will cover the following aspects of everyday life:

Entry requirements

You will need curiosity in how language works, an interest in and enthusiasm for the countries, their culture and people.


At the end of the second year you will be assessed both internally and externally in reading, writing and speaking.

Future opportunities

Studying an ab initio language as part of your IB Diploma course will give you many of the learning and language skills you will require for careers and university study.
