English Language A Level at Mill Hill County High School

Course description

The specification provides students with a natural progression from their GCSE study of English language. It encourages students to develop their interest in and appreciation of English, through learning about its structures and its functions, its developments and its variations. It also allows students to develop their ability to express themselves in speech and writing, producing texts for different audiences, purposes and in different genres.

A2 Level

Unit 1 - Language, the individual and society

Section A - Textual Variations and Representations
Two texts (one contemporary and one older test) linked by topic of theme

Section B - Children's Language Development
a discursive essay on chlidren's language development, with a choice of two questions where the data provided will focus on spoken, written or multimodal language
40% of total A Level mark

Unit 2 - Language Diversity and Change
Language diversity and change, Language discourses, Writing skills   /   40% of total A Level mark

Unit 3 - Non-exam assessment: Language in Action
Language investigation (2,000 words excluding data)
A piece of original writing and commentary (1,500 words total)
20% total A Level mark
