Music Technology AS level at Nower Hill High School

Course description

Who is the course for?

Students who are really interested in popular music and music production.

What can it lead to?

Careers in the music and media industries. Many music degree courses are wholly or partly based on music technology.  The course involves many transferable I.T. skills.

Course content

This course extends your understanding of the role technology plays in our experience of music today and how it affects the way music is produced and listened to. You’ll use technology to compose and arrange your own scores, gaining a thorough grounding in sequencing and recording skills. The emphasis is on practical performance and production skills. You will learn how to record in a studio and mix your tracks.

Entry requirements

You are not required to have studied Music Technology in advance, but if you studied Music or Music Technology as a GCSE subject or BTEC, you must have achieved Grade C or above (or equivalent).


70% externally assessed coursework portfolio to be submitted by the end of April, 30% written examination: “listening and analysing”.

The portfolio is assessed through three tasks:

  1. Sequenced Realised Performance MIDI (Stimulus from Edexcel)
  2. Multi-Track Recording (8+ Track recording of song chosen by student)
  3. Creative Sequenced Arrangement – an arrangement to show creative manipulation of Stimulus set by Edexcel.

To prepare for the listening and analysing exam many genres and pieces of music will be studied, charting popular music from 1910 to the present. The development of recording and production techniques will also be examined.

Future opportunities
