Media Studies at Framwellgate School

Course description

Why Study Media Studies ?

Everyone consumes the media every day of their lives and pupils will already bring a great deal of knowledge to the course. This alone makes Media Studies a subject area with direct relevance to peoples’ lives and the world in which we live, as well as providing an excellent “way in” to a chosen career.

Not only will the course develop the skills of observation, analysis and evaluation but students will also become proficient at utilising media technologies during the coursework tasks, for example creating an introduction to a fiction film. There will also be a strong emphasis on media concepts and theory.

A course in Media Studies can lead to a future career in a surprisingly diverse field. Journalism and its various sub-sections such as photography, editing and researching are possibilities. Broadcasting, filming, public relations, consultancy, advertising, production management and even script writing can all be approached through a Media Studies qualification.

Features of the Course:

The course will include the use of digital camcorders and Microsoft Premiere editing software, as well as covering the core concepts of Audience, Institutions, Representation and Media language.

There will be a range of extra-curricular opportunities which will vary across the modules chosen but may include visits to local universities, television production studios and film-making competitions.
