A Level Biology at Swakeleys School for Girls

Course description

There will be opportunities for students to attend external lectures, workshops and conferences, often, provided by the examining board for specific aspects of the course. There will also be the possibility of a Field Trip which provides opportunities to develop research and data handling skills plus gives students the ability to conduct experiments and analyse the outcome.

Course content

Module 1 – Development of practical skills in biology

Module 2 – Foundations in biology

Module 3 – Exchange and transport

Module 4 – Biodiversity, evolution and disease

Module 5 – Communications, homeostasis and energy

Module 6 – Genetics, evolution and ecosystems

Entry requirements

All students will need to obtain an A*-B grade at GCSE in order to continue with this subject at Post 16. All students will sit an exam in late September once the AS course has begun, it is a requirement that all students pass this exam. Failure to do so may result in the student being asked to choose an alternative course.

Future opportunities

Gaining a qualification in Biology at this level can lead into Higher Education in areas such as, Biological Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacology, Dentistry, Veterinary, Dietetics, Nursing, Forensics, Sports Science, Psychology, Teaching and more. Students of Biology have also progressed into other less related areas such as Business and Law.
