Spanish A level at Boroughbridge High School

Course description

2 of the biggest regrets older people have are not travelling enough and not developing language skills.  An A level in Spanish is a fantastic way of helping ensure you don't have to live with such regrets!  Languages are all around us; they are used in so many situations whether at work, on holiday or just casually in day-to-day life as we live in an increasingly global society.  Choosing a modern foreign language at A level is a really smart move if you want to further your knowledge of a fascinating subject that offers you a range of career possibilities at the end, as well as being a lot of fun along the way.  Learning a language is a never-ending process; as languages are constantly changing.  This is one of the great things about learning languages; you're always up to speed with the world!  You may feel like turning your back on languages after doing them for two years at GCSE, but don't!  The many transferable skills and qualifications that you gain from studying a language at A level are incredibly important tools to have under your belt.  Languages really do open doors.  The British have a reputation of expecting other people to speak English to them and not bothering to even try a few words in the native tongue of the country.  The media constantly reminds us that Britain is short of linguists and research shows that employment prospects among linguists are excellent.  This is your chance to become a treasured linguist as well as acquiring lifelong skills, even if you wish to do a degree in other subjects.

The trans-national world in which we now live is crying out for people with modern language skills.  Spanish is spoken as a first language by approximately 400 milliion people in countries all over the world.  It is said that there will be a Spanish speaking US president before the end of this century!  Research shows employment prospects among linguists to be excellent.  Nowadays, a vast range of degree courses and careers are available; you can specialise in modern languages or combine Spanish with almost any other subject area to enhance your prospects and provide you with the skills for further work or study.  You will be absolutely amazed at the improvement you make from GCSE level.
