Course description

If you enjoy debating current affairs and politics and would like to study a subject that is relevant to your everyday life, then A-level in Government and Politics is perfect for you. The A-level Government and Politics course is designed to encourage students to develop their critical thinking skills and enhance their ability to interpret, evaluate and comment on the nature of politics. Students acquire knowledge of the structures of authority and power within the political system of the United Kingdom, as well as developing political analysis of other political systems in the world.

Year 1 Unit 1 - People and Politics

  • Democracy and participation
  • Political parties
  • Electoral systems
  • Voting behaviour and the Media.

Unit 2 - Governing the UK

  • The Constitution
  • Parliament
  • Prime Minister and executive
  • Relationships between the branches.

A level Government and Politics will help develop your analytical and critical thinking whilst also developing your research and presenting skills.  Politics will develop your extended writing skills and will provide an excellent foundation for any chosen subject at degree level.  The subject makes an excellent combination with subjects such as History, Sociology, Economics and English.
