English Literature AS A2 at The Rushden Community College
The course aims to develop increasingly confident, independent and reflective readers of a range of texts as they pay close attention to how narrative works in text; make connections across texts; explore genre through the study of drama, prose and poetry; extend independent reading and extend their awareness of different critical method and readings.
Unit 1 Aspects of Narrative (open book exam)
Unit 2 Dramatic Genres (a portfolio of two pieces of written coursework - one analytical and one 're-creative')
Unit 3 Texts and Genres (closed book exam on at least three prose and poetry texts)
Unit 4 Further and Independent Reading (a portfolio of two pieces of written coursework - one comparative study of two texts and application of critical methods to a text)
Current set texts include The Kite Runner ; Enduring Love , Great Expectations , selections of poetry by W H Auden and Christina Rossetti, plays by Shakespeare and other Jacobean dramatists, Chaucer, Mary Shelley, Angela Carter and texts independently selected by each student.
5 GCSE grades C or above. This must include English and English Literature, preferably at Grade B or above.
Examination with the possibility of up to two coursework units. AS one year, A2 two years.
