Biology AS & A Level at Bebington High Sports College

Course description

A Level Biology is a challenging, rewarding course that helps students to develop skills and knowledge necessary for a successful career in Science. A Level Biology builds on the concepts and skills developed in the GCSE and it is particularly suitable for students who have studied either separate Science or Additional Science at GCSE.

Course content

There are a total of six units in the course – three at AS and three at A2:

AS (one year):

  • Unit 1: Biology and disease
  • Unit 2: The variety of living organisms
  • Unit 3: Investigations and practical skills in AS Biology

A2 (one year):

  • Unit 4: Populations and environment
  • Unit 5: Control in cells and organisms
  • Unit 6: Investigations and practical skills in A2 Biology

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs A*-C to include Science and Maths at B.


Four of the units are assessed by written exam. Two units assess investigative and practical skills which will be marked by school.

Future opportunities

This course is designed to give students a sound understanding of the key principles in Biology. It offers a mixture of practical and theoretical learning and is designed to give students the opportunity to gain a highly valued qualification in a traditional academic subject. During the course students will have the opportunity to extend their learning with both field work and industry visits.

Students who study A level Biology go on to study a variety of courses at University including; dentistry, medicine, forestry, horticulture, speech and language therapy, sports rehabilitation, midwifery, nursing, ecology, physiotherapy, occupational health and many Biology related courses.
