If you have a genuine love of, or a real aptitude for, mathematics, this Further Mathematics study programme will take you deeper into this hugely rewarding subject and allow you to really explore your abilities. AS and A Level Further Mathematics are valuable, well-recognised qualifications for future life.

Course content

If you have a genuine love of, or a real aptitude for, mathematics, this Further Mathematics study programme will take you deeper into this hugely rewarding subject and allow you to really explore your abilities. AS and A Level Further Mathematics are valuable, well-recognised qualifications for future life.

Some topics on the course will be taught using the mathematical program Autograph which is a very powerful and sophisticated graphing tool. Access to laptop computers will also enable you to make use of Autograph in some areas of the syllabus. It is recommended that you have a good scientific calculator. We recommend the Casio fx-991EX or similar.

Entry requirements

To be accepted onto a two-year A Level programme, all entrants must hold at least a grade 5 in GCSE Maths and a grade 5 in GCSE English Language, as well as at least 3 other GCSEs at grade C or above. Certain subjects require a minimum of GCSE grade B; these are detailed in this prospectus and on the Petroc website.
Continuation onto Year 2 of the A2 programme will be dependent on achieving at least a grade D at AS in the subjects being continued to A2.

Grade A* or A in Mathematics.

Assessment

AS Level:

  • One 1 hour 30 min paper on Pure Mathematics
  • One 1 hour 30 min paper on Applied Mathematics

A2 Level:

  • Two 1 hour 30 min papers on Pure Mathematics
  • Two 1 hour 30 min papers on Applied mathematics

Future opportunities

Study of this course shows that you have a special aptitude for mathematics, together with well-founded problem-solving skills and logical ordered thinking. This is an excellent stepping stone towards any mathematics related degree course. If you want to study Physics or Engineering at university, a Further Mathematics A Level or AS Level can really strengthen your application.

Q. Can I do AS and A2 Further Maths without doing A2 Level Mathematics?
A. You have to be taking an A2 Level course in Mathematics alongside any Further Mathematics qualification.

Q. Can I pick up AS Further Mathematics in my second year of study?
A. Yes. Studying AS Further Mathematics will strengthen any applications to study mathematics, Physics and engineering related subjects at university. It will also help you the mathematics you will encounter in your first term at university.
