Chemistry at St Mary's Catholic School

Course description

This course builds on the chemistry learnt at GCSE.

Course content

The AS and the A2 comprise 3 modules each, one of which is practical coursework.

The AS has two examined modules:-

  • Atoms, Bonds and Groups which examines the atomic structure and bonding of elements as well as how reactions occur on a mathematical basis.
  • Chains, Energy and Resources which examines organic chemistry and where we obtain energy from.

The A2 also has two examined units:-

  • Rings, Polymers and Analysis which takes the study of organic chemistry further and includes modern methods of analysis.
  • Equilibria, Energetics and Elements which studies the speed of chemical reactions and transition metals.

Entry requirements

B in Chemistry or AA in Double Award Science.

Assessment

In both AS and A2 the examinations are 1.5 hours long and comprise a series of short answer questions.

The practical coursework at AS is skills based and at A2 longer investigations are required.

Further information

This course is only available to those students who have studied TRIPLE SCIENCE in year 11.
