Exploring Careers in Service Industries (Catering and Retail) Entry Level 2 and 3 at New College Stamford

Course description

This work-based course is designed to explore Catering and Retail within the service industries. You will gain specific and transferable work skills whilst undertaking learning in a range of realistic working environments which include an on-site Cafe’ and Retail Shop. You will learn how to prepare, cook and serve a range of dishes and also learn other work related tasks such as safe storage of food and cleaning food areas. You will also develop retail skills, customer service skills, and learn business skills, whilst undertaking work experience in real catering and retail environments.This programme also include sessions in English and maths, enrichment, tutorials, independence and supported study.

Entry requirements

No formal qualification required.


You will be assessed on their progress throughout the year and build a portfolio of evidence. The work is validated by an external verifier from AIM Awards. Functional skills will involve tests at the appropriate level.

Future opportunities

After one year, you may remain at the same level to maintain progress and broaden their knowledge, or progress to the next Entry Level or to the Pathways course.

You will be provided with opportunities to develop skills that support your social and personal development, and undertake employability sessions including work experience.All of our programmes are underpinned by the opportunity to develop life skills. These include: independent living skills, communication development, travel training and safety in the community.
