Art & Design BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate at St George's Church of England Foundation School (Broadstairs)

Course description

The BTEC LEVEL 3 National Extended Certificate in Art and Design provides students with opportunities to develop personal responses to ideas, observations, experiences, environments and cultures in practical, critical and contextual forms. Students will experience a broad area of study and develop skills in a variety of areas. They will be encouraged to use their creative skill to work independently whilst under the guidance of experienced and enthusiastic teachers. A lively imagination and a willingness to experiment with ideas and processes will help a student to succeed. This qualification is equivalent to 1 A Level.

Course content

Students will complete four Units which are teacher led but require strong student input and creativity. Students will be given a brief, similar to one found within a design industry environment and are expected to produce independent personal responses. Students will be introduced to a variety of techniques and processes and are expected to record ideas in a personal sketchbook. Skills covered include painting, drawing, 3D, graphics, collage and printmaking.

The four Units covered are;

1. Visual recording and communication (120 GLH) - Set and marked externally

2. Critical and contextual studies in Art & Design (90 GLH) - Set and marked externally

3. The creative process (90 GLH) - Set and marked internally

4. Fine Art materials, techniques and processes (60 GLH)

Entry requirements

The equivalent of three 4-9 grades at GCSE (P -D* BTEC) as well as a Pass or grade 4 in Art or Textiles.

Assessment

Two units are internally assessed and two units externally set and assessed.

WHERE NEXT?

Foundation Diploma leading to a wide range of degrees in a range of creative disciplines. Direct entry to degree level. 

JOB OPPORTUNITIES:

Any area of work requiring a level of creativity from design to media.
