Biology - AS/A2 Level at Thornleigh Salesian College

Course description

Biology is the scientific exploration of the vast and diverse world of living organisms; an exploration that has expanded enormously within the last four decades revealing a wealth of knowledge about ourselves and about the millions of other organisms with whom we share this planet Earth.

Today, biological research, worldwide, spans an almost infinite spectrum of studies from molecules to landscapes.

  • Are you intrigued with the incredible variety of organisms that inhabit our planet?
  • Have you wondered about their origin and how they have evolved?
  • Can we manage the capacity of our global-life support system to continue sustaining a rapidly increasing human population?
  • What lies ahead for the future of genetic engineering?
  • What are clones and transgenic animals?

Course content

In Biology you will study the following themes:

Basic biochemstry and organisation, Biodiversity and physiology of body systems, Metabolism, Microbiology and Homeostasis, Environment, Genetics and Evolution.

Entry requirements

You will require 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including English and Maths as well as C grades in the subjects that you want to study. Many courses do accept students who have not previously studied the subject. To study AS Level Science subjects you will require a minimum combination of GCSE B/B in Core and Additional Science. To study AS Level Maths you will require a minimum of a B grade in Maths GCSE.

Assessment

Following A Level reforms in this subject, from 2015, all exams will need to be taken at the end of the course. AS grades do not contribute to the A Level grade.

Future opportunities

Previous students have gone on to study: medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, radiography, nursing, chiropody, psychology, forensic science, archaeology, marine biology, biological science, ecology, sports studies, biochemistry, accountancy and even teacher training!

Don't worry if you don't yet know what you want to do. A-level Biology provides a useful background to a wide variety of Further and Higher Education courses, and we certainly don't expect everyone who takes the course to become a professional biologist.
