Public Services - Skills for Public Services Diploma Level 3 (PUB1) at Barnsley College
The aim of our course is to give a realistic insight into the personal and professional skills needed to be an effective member of today’s Public Services. Students will also learn about the values and attitudes needed for working in this challenging, but unique sector.
As part of the course you will be expected to undertake a range of outdoor activities, including visits to various public services, e.g. Army, RAF, Magistrates Court. You will also take part in expeditions which may involve overnight stays.
What subject areas will I study?
•Prepare for employment in a chosen uniformed service
•Develop aspects of physical fitness for entry to the uniformed services
•Develop leadership skills
•Understand conflict management and personal protection
•Participate in a sports coaching session
•Participate in uniformed service routine
•Assist in planning and leading adventurous activities
•Understand planning for emergency situations in the uniformed services
•Understand how the Government, International Organisations and Media Impact
Five GCSEs at grade 9/A* to 4/C including English grade 4 or above OR Level
2 Diploma for Entry to the Uniformed Services plus English at grade 4 or above.

If your total annual household income is less than £35,000 you could be eligible for financial support through our Learner Support Fund for travel (up to £700), if your household income is below £20,000 you could be eligible for food, trips, printing, equipment and childcare. You don’t have to pay this money back.
You can pick up a Learner Support Fund application form from Student Services on the ground floor at the Old Mill Lane campus.
If you are aged between 16 and 18 and currently living on your own, in care or leaving care, you could be eligible for a non-repayable bursary of up to £1,200 per year.*

FREE bus services!
We realise that getting to and from college might not be very easy for everyone so we have funded four free return bus services for our students. They go to and from the Old Mill Lane campus which is just a few minutes’ walk from our Sixth Form college campus.

Stocksbridge via Penistone > Old Mill Lane campus
South Elmsall via South Kirby, Hemsworth, Kinsley, Fitzwilliam and Ryhill > Old Mill Lane campus
Rotherham via Ecclesfield and Chapeltown > Old Mill Lane campus
These bus routes are completely free for our students and operate on a first come, first served basis. Each route operates to ensure students get to college before lessons start and a return service is provided after lessons finish. On completion of this programme you can apply for a career in any of the public services. This may include; the Police Service, Ambulance Service, Fire and Rescue Service, Army, RAF, Royal Navy, Customs and Excise or Prison Service. Alternatively you may be able to progress onto a Level 4 Higher Education course at University Campus Barnsley, or other university.
