Art and Design A Level at Claremont High School Academy

Course description

During the course you will have the opportunity to explore a wide range of 2D and 3D media and techniques through a series of Art and Design projects. These creative tasks will develop your confidence, practical skills and knowledge of alternative creative working practices. Considerable emphasis is placed upon improving your observational drawing as the basis for more ambitious and independent painting, sculpture and print making.

In addition to the practical you will study the work of historical and contemporary makers through participation in regular gallery visits, workshops with art practitioners and the completion of independent research assignments.

Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to take part in focused whole-day workshops to investigate new techniques, as well as the opportunity to take part in a trip abroad. You will study the human figure through detailed drawing and clay sculpture sessions working directly from the visiting life models.

We now have a fantastic dedicated 6th Form Art Studio giving each student the space and opportunity to develop their visual arts skills. You will explore imagery and ideas through a variety of traditional and contemporary media in response to a range of challenging topics designed to extend your creative practice. During the course you will build a portfolio of personal work which can be used to support your application for university pre-degree Art, Craft and Design programmes.


Unit 1 - Portfolio Unit. Exploring a wide range of new techniques and media, you will build a body of quality work based on observational drawing.

Unit 2 - External Assignment. Produce an independent project based on your choice of theme from the given paper.


Unit 3 - Personal Investigation. Explore your choice of theme through your choice of media. This project is highly independent however you will be supported and guided through its development. You will also produce a 1000 word supporting statement.

Unit 4 - External Assignment. Produce an independent project based on your choice of theme from the given paper.

Entry requirements

B in Art GCSE or Merit (BTEC First Art and Design)
