Spanish A Level at John Hampden Grammar School
The course covers both familiar and relevant topics to make the transition from GCSE to A Level more manageable. In the first year topics include media (TV, adverts, new technology), popular culture (cinema, music, fashion), healthy lifestyles (sport, wellbeing, holidays) and relationships (family, friends, partners).
In the second year, students will study a broader range of topics including multicultural society and contemporary social issues. They will also have the opportunity to study a cultural topic from a choice of a region in a Spanish speaking country, a film or director, literature, music and art.
Students will develop their comprehension, fluency and confidence through a wide variety of activities, drawing on authentic, lively materials from newspapers, films, magazines, radio, literature and the internet. Students will also be offered the opportunity to take part in a visit to Spain in Year 12 or 13, involving a homestay with local families. This will enable them to vastly improve their confidence in their comprehension and speaking skills, also giving them a valuable insight into the Spanish way of life.
Our entry requirements are as follows – all of these requirements must be met:
- A minimum of 7 GCSE full course passes at a C grade or higher
- A minimum GCSE total points score of 344 based on the best 8 full course separate subject GCSE passes
- A minimum C grade in English Language and Mathematics
