Physical Education AS/A2 Level at Nottingham Academy

Course description

Students who have an interest in sport. If you seek a career in

sport in areas such as talent identification, physiotherapy,

teaching or coaching, you will benefit from studying

this course.

Course content

You will have the chance to take on roles of ‘performer’,

‘leader’, or ‘official’. You will review your current participation in

physical activity and identify opportunities to create a

development plan. You will also learn about sport, healthy

lifestyles, fitness and training.


Units covered at AS

– Unit 1: Introduction to physical education.

– Unit 2: Acquiring, developing and evaluating skills in

physical education.


Units covered at A2

Socio-cultural options

– Either historical studies or comparative studies.

Scientific options

– Either sports psychology or biomechanics or exercise and

sport physiology.

Entry requirements

5+ A*-C grades at GCSE including B grade or above in English,

mathematics, science and a distinction grade in level 2 sport.



Written examination (60%) and practical assessment (40%).


Written examination (70%) and practical assessment (30%).

Future opportunities

The subjects you learn about will be invaluable at a personal

level and will help you to be better at sport, no matter what

your standard. A level PE also opens up a whole number of

career options such as: sport scientist, PE teacher,

physiotherapist or working for a national governing body.
