Sports Science AS and A Level *Fees Payable* at Cheltenham College

Course description

The Sports Science Department undertakes a multi-disciplinary approach, focusing primarily on the performer and the ways in which we can optimize human performance.

At A Level, students are encouraged to appreciate and investigate the psychological, sociological and physiological issues that influence elite athletes, and impact mass participation. There is a strong theme of linking theory to their own practical performance, which is an appealing aspect of the course. Pupils enjoy having the opportunity to understand first hand why they feel as they do when they push themselves beyond a comfortable training zone.

Our specification allows for some exciting trips giving the students first hand experience of physiology testing, and exercising to exhaustion. Recent trips have included St Georges’ Park National Football Centre, physiology laboratories at Bath University and The National Cycling Centre in Manchester.

In the Sixth Form pupils can also choose to study P.E. as an A Level subject. The programme is closely linked to the material that would be studied on a sports science degree course. Pupils are assessed in two sports and they are required to study Anatomy, Exercise Physiology, Sports Psychology and the Socio-Cultural aspects of sport. We follow the AQA specification.
