Design Technology: Product Design (3D Design) A Level at The Knights Templar School
Product Design offers students the opportunity to develop both academic and practical skills in a well-equipped environment. During the 3D Design AS course students are given topics or areas to investigate which will develop their design and practical skill. Current themes are ‘Flat-pack speakers’ and ‘Pewter cast jewellery’.
As they progress to A2 students will choose a project theme that interests them. Previous projects have included furniture such as tables and chairs, musical instruments, sports equipment, children’s play furniture and objects involving mechanical engineering.
Key areas developed include research and analytical skills, creativity, time management, technical knowledge - including CAD/CAM, practical skills and problem solving. It also teaches students the benefits of working both independently and as part of a team.
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and Maths, for a full level 3 programme.
Students are required to attain a B grade in Product Design at GCSE in order to take the Design and Technology: Product Design (3D Design) course.
