Geography at Oaklands Catholic School

Course description

Geography as a subject enables students to:

  • Address and attempt to understand topical issues
  • Foster an understanding of the environment and its processes
  • Develop awareness of cultural diversity and geographical variations relevant to business and good citizenship
  • Analyse primary and secondary information, paralleling the needs of every day employment
  • Be well prepared for the challenges of the information society in an increasingly globalised economy
  • Use quantitative methods and ICT effectively

At AS, all candidates will study core human and physical geography. In each area of study candidates will consider the values and attitudes of decision makers, consider their own values and attitudes to the issues being studied and support their learning of ideas through the study of specific case studies. Candidates will also develop a variety of geographical skills, which will broaden and deepen existing knowledge and be employed with a greater degree of independence.

At A2, candidates will continue to study a combination of human and physical geography. Candidates are required to choose whether to undertake preparatory investigative work in the field in order to be able to produce a fieldwork investigation, or undertake an issue evaluation exercise to extend the content within the specialised context of issue evaluation.

Course content

Geography students at A level will encounter a wide variety of learning styles with increasing emphasis on the develop-ment of independent learning skills.

They will carry out local fieldwork, will research topics in small groups and give presentations to the class as well as traditional classroom based teaching.

Extracts from TV programmes and soft ware programmes are also used to enhance learning.

Reading widely is encouraged at A level, using journals, magazines and text books. Daily and weekend newspapers are excellent sources of current data and case studies. Stu-dents are encouraged to keep a “scrap book” file of cuttings, notes from TV documentaries that they watch to incorporate into their written work.

Residential fieldwork will deepen the students experience and understanding in preparation for the A2 course and pre-vious fieldwork opportunities have included Iceland and Sici-ly. In Year 12, students are taken on a three-day residential visit to the Dorset coast to learn coastal case studies, but also to collect data for the skills paper.

Day visits are also arranged to a London university to work with the wave tank and Chichester harbour when studying coastal processes. Other visits to local universities for revision conferences are also arranged

Unit 1: Physical and Human Geography

  • Rivers, floods and management
  • Coastal environments
  • Global population change
  • Food supply issues

Unit 2: Applied Geography

  • Basic, investigative. ICT, graphical, cartographical and statistical skills.
  • Research skills and the assessment of AS fieldwork (trip to Dorset).

Unit 3: Contemporary Geographical Issues

  • Plate tectonics and associated hazards
  • Challenges facing ecosystsms
  • World cities—evolution or revolution?
  • Development and Globalisation

Unit 4 Geography Fieldwork Investigation

Entry requirements

  • A minimum of 5 A*-C grades at GCSE including English and Maths.
  • Geography GCSE grade C or above is advised.

Assessment

Unit 1: Physical and Human Geography

  • Structured short and extended questions.
  • Externally assessed: Written paper (2 hours)
  • Weighting: 70% of total AS/35% A Level marks.

Unit 2: Applied Geography

  • Structured skills and generic research/fieldwork questions.
  • Externally assessed: Written Paper 1 hour

Unit 3: Contemporary Geographical Issues

  • Structured short and extended questions and an essay.
  • Externally assessed: Written Paper 2.5 hours
  • Weighting: 30% of total A Level marks

Unit 4 Geography Fieldwork Investigation

  • Structured short and extended questions based on candi-dates’ own fieldwork investigation.
  • Externally assessed: Written Paper 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Weighting: 20% of total A Level marks

 

 

Future opportunities

Geography is widely recognised as a subject in its own right and also one that links with others comfortably for the mod-ern world of work, such as Economics, Architecture and Urban Planning, Environmental science, ICT, Tourism and Sports science.

Geography provides you with many relevant skills that are required in the world of work; Commerce, Business, Man-agement and Finance, Law, Education, Geographical Information systems, HM Services, Sports and Recreational management, Surveying, Planning, Engineering, Civil ser-vice, Meteorology, Tourism and even Teaching.
