SolidWorks for Product Designers at The Victory Academy
Product Designers are capable of bridging the gap between client and manufacturer and need to convey their ideas in visually understandable ways. SolidWorks is known as a 3D Modelling or CAD (Computer Aided Design) program and is a very powerful tool in visualising and even manufacturing products.
All Product Designers will be expected to attend this course as it will inform their studies, better preparing them for what is expected in both university and industry. Manufacturing techniques such as injection molding and 3D printing are impossible to accomplish without knowledge of 3D modelling/CAD.
At the end of the two years, there is an online test that, once passed, will accredit students with the title of CSWA - Academic (Certified SolidWorks Assossiate) enabling them the right to say they are skilled in the program.
The basic principles of 3D Modelling will be introduced and touched upon usinf SolidWorks tutorials. There will be exercises linking drawing skills to CAD skills, e.g. drawing on planes, creating cubes and eclipses.
At this stage you will be able to create 3D models with ease, taking your drawings and creating something solid on the computer. You will be able to make realistic renderings of your final design to place it within the context of your design brief.
To be selected in conjunction with A Level Product Design
Year 1: Class tests: Short tests to assess how well you understand the program
Year 2: Class tests and 3 hour examination - above 80% to pass
SolidWorks is an industry standard program, meaning that in the majority of design based companies, SolidWorks or similar CAD programs are used daily. By undertaking this course you are giving yourself the skills to become a valuable member of a Design Team, a Multi-talented Freelancer or even a Design Engineer.
