Art and Design (Fine Art) AS / A Level at Kesgrave High School

Course description

The Fine Art, Art & Design course lets you develop your ability to appreciate the visual world, and to respond in a personal and creative way. This course will enable you to develop your experiences and knowledge of materials, practices and technologies in a variety of Fine Art and new media disciplines. This course will enable you to develop your personal interests while placing demands on the development of your imaginative, creative, analytical, experimental and documentary skills…aspects you will have had some experience of during your GCSE studies.

You will experience recording from direct observation and communicate ideas, experiences, insights and information in visual and written forms. You will explore and experiment with a broad range of process, techniques and materials related to your chosen syllabus. Through your contextual studies you will develop your communication skills and your ability to critically analyse and compare.

Course content

Teaching is student-centred and aims to develop each student's intellectual, aesthetic and creative potential and to teach appropriate skills and techniques. Much of the coursework you will undertake will be thematically driven which should achieve a cohesive body of work. To support and complement independent learning, there will also be directed skill based workshops which will broaden your knowledge base in a range of processes. Studio based learning will be augmented with field studies and gallery / museum visits.

Entry requirements

GCSE Grade C or relevant subject


Work is internally assessed throughout the course and externally moderated by Edexcel at the final exhibition. Coursework = 60%  Final examination = 40%.

A/S Level:

1 coursework module and an externally set practical assignment lasting 8 hours in total.

A2 Level:

1 coursework unit which is in two parts, a Personal and a Practical study.

The Personal Study is a detailed contextual study on an aspect of art and design. This is produced as a written and illustrated journal. This work will direct the Practical study. This involves producing a work journal, coursework portfolio and artefact in a two or three-dimensional area of art and design.

Future opportunities

The AS and Advanced GCE Art and Design course will enable you to follow a further course of study in Art and Design disciplines at higher levels at college or university leading to an advanced GNVQ, BTEC or BA honours degree.  This would lead to career opportunities in many design and craft fields.

The qualification is also suitable for those wishing to follow careers where a background in Art is beneficial.  For example, Advertising, Publishing, Architecture, Museums, Theatre or Gallery work, Teaching (Primary).
