City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner (Early Years Educator)

The Early Years Educator qualifications offered by City and Guilds, Pearson and Cache are the only L3 qualifications for early years that will be classed as full and relevant for learners registering for a Level 3 qualification from 1st September 2014

This qualification is for anyone working within a role such as an Early Years Educator, Childminder, Nursery Nurse. You may or may not have some supervisory responsibilities.

In order to achieve this qualification you will be required to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of early years education and care, including how you can support and promote children’s early education and development which enables children to progress and prepares them for school

In order to achieve the Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner (Early Years Educator), learners must achieve 64 credits through completing 17 mandatory units which include:

  • Unit 300 – Developing effective study skills
  • Unit 301 – Promote partnership working with parents
  • Unit 303 – Principles of safeguarding policies and procedures in early years settings
  • Unit 305 – Working in partnership with colleagues and other professionals in early years settings
  • Unit 306 – Plan and implement activities, play opportunities and educational programmes in an early years setting
  • Unit 307 – Promoting children’s health and welfare in an early years setting
  • Unit 311 – Supporting children’s creative and imaginative play and experiences
  • Unit 400 – Theories which underpin practice in the early years sector*
  • Unit 401 – Child development from conception to 7 years*
  • Unit 402 – Observation and assessment in the early years sector*

*These units are Level 4 units.

You are also required to complete four mandatory assignments which have been set by City & Guilds. These are marked; graded (Refer/Pass/Merit/Distinction) and quality assured by the Centre and will provide the evidence for the following units:

  • Unit 303 – Principles of safeguarding policies and procedures in early years settings
  • Unit 400 – Theories which underpin practice in the early years sector
  • Unit 401 – Child development from conception to 7 years
  • Unit 402 – Observation and assessment in the early years sector

Assessment

Each learner will be assigned an assessor who will carry out workplace assessments and assist the learner in building their portfolio of evidence. A training plan will be written with the individual learner which will identify their learning needs and the theory required. Theory sessions will be agreed to meet the learners and employer requirements.

The evidence of your performance will be derived from assessor observations of you carrying out real work activities in the workplace, supporting evidence will be gathered by use of other methods such as professional discussion, reflective accounts, questions and formal assignments.

Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner (Early Years Educator) will take approximately 15 months depending on the individual’s experience, knowledge and competence.
