Sport and Active Leisure - Advanced Diploma at Queensbury School

Course description

Diplomas provide a stimulating and diverse programme of applied learning within the occupational areas of sport, health & fitness, play & youth work, media & event / business management. They are designed to equip young people with the skills, knowledge and attributes necessary within the sport & active leisure industry.

Course content

The Advanced Diploma takes a detailed look at the sport and leisure industry. There is an increased focus on sports development and business management.

Content is based on 3 key themes; Sport & Active Leisure and the individual, Sport & Active Leisure and the Economy, Sport & Active Leisure and the Community.

There are 8 units of study:

  • The impact of an active and healthy lifestyle
  • Being an effective manager and leader in sport and active leisure
  • Science and technology in sport and active leisure
  • Applying science and technology to enhance performance in sport and active leisure
  • Globalisation and the sport and active leisure industry
  • Sport and active policy
  • Promoting opportunities for all in sport and active leisure
  • Bringing the community together through sport and active leisure

Entry requirements

You will need to demonstrate an overall interest in the roles that operate within the sports industry. You will also need a recommendation from your school or a suitable reference and will be required to attend an interview.

Minimum 5 GCSE's at A*- C including English and Maths.


Two of the 8 units are assessed via an external exam that require both short and essay style written responses. The remaining 6 units are assessed through internally set assignments. These will be broken down into a number of separate tasks and activities. Where possible assessments will be applied in nature and may therefore take place as some form of work experience.

The Diploma is graded A*/A/B/C/D/E

The Level 3 Advanced qualification is equivalent to 3 A level awards (there is a Level 3 Progression Award which is equivalent to 2 A level awards).

Future opportunities

The qualification will provide opportunities for progression into employment within the sports industry i.e. sports management / development.

Further information

The qualification will provide opportunities for progression onto advanced apprenticeships such as instructing physical activity and exercise or progression onto higher education courses such as a degree in sports science, sports management or health promotion.
