Hospitality & Catering Entry Level Certificate at Oaklands College

Course description

This course is designed for students who would like to get on the first rung of a career in catering. You will learn about aspects of food and cooking, practically and in theory classes. It will highlight the importance of hygiene, health and safety and team work. It will provide preparatory work towards gaining employment. You will go on a number of educational visits to support your study. You will be expected to undertake Mathematics and English as part of your study programme

Course content

For this qualification you need to complete a number of units on which you will be assessed by your tutor as to your ability to achieve identified tasks. These will include preparing food, cooking food, healthy diets, counter service and managing money. You will be assessed and complete a portfolio. Alongside this the theory element is tested by created by completing posters and assignments. Students can have more than one opportunity to be assessed.

Entry requirements

The VTCT Entry Level Certificate in Vocational Studies - Hospitality and Catering (Entry 3)(QCF) is a preparation for work qualification that has been designed to prepare you for a career in the hospitality industry. This qualification will develop your knowledge and understanding of the main outlets in the hospitality industry and the career opportunities available. Furthermore, you will learn about the importance of good customer service. You will learn how to communicate with customers and know the importance of good personal presentation. This qualification is ideal for students who need a reasonable level of support to achieve the qualifications whilst developing your Maths and English skills. 95% and above attendance is required. 

An interest in cooking and serving food. Enjoy meeting people and working as part of a team.


You will be assessed throughout the programme within the practical and theory environment. In the classroom you will compile a portfolio by completing assignments that have been set by your tutor and are set at the correct level. There are on-going assessments in practical lessons but there are two main tests that will need to be completed.

Financial information

Students will have to pay a materials cost of approximately £200, this covers specialist clothing, knives together with costs for visits and exams

16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.

Future opportunities

Students can progress onto a level 1 programme, other FE courses or employment.

Further information

You must attend lessons and formal exams for Functional skills in English and maths. Work experience internally and externally through the stables restaurant Attend Oakland's events.
