Physical Education A Level at Newlands Girls' School

Course description

You will gain an in-depth understanding of the human body and the impact that sport or physical activity can have, both physiologically and psychologically. Nutrition, training and technological advances in sport will also be analysed to assess their impact on overall performance. These are just some of the examples of topics that will be covered in preparation for the examined module of the course (60%). 40% is assessed through practical application.

Course content

At AS you will study Physiology, Skill Acquisition, and Opportunities for Participation
At A2 you will study Applied Physiology, Psychology and Contemporary Issues

Entry requirements

You need to have achieved a C grade minimum in GCSE PE or merit in BTEC Sport to be considered for this course.


At both AS and A2 there is a final 1 ½ hour examination which is worth 60% and a practical assessment worth 40%. At AS you need to have two chosen practical assessments, whereas at A2 this is just one.
You will have the opportunity to choose from a huge range of sports and can perform,
officiate or coach in any of these. You will also be required to analyse and evaluate your performance in these activities.
