English Language GCSE at The Basildon Academies Sixth Form

Course description

The overall aim of this course is to provide an understanding of
how we communicate effectively through spoken and written texts.

This course is for students who:

  • Wish to develop their ability in constructing their writing
  • Have an interest in identifying how writers create meaning within texts
  • Want to develop their confidence in speaking and listening tasks

Course content

Paper 1 - 01
This externally assessed exam contains
Section A – students will use their comprehension, inference and
            deduction skills to answer on an unseen reading passage
Section B – students will answer on a set text from their Anthology regarding
            the writer’s craft. They will also answer a short writing task on the same  theme
Section C – students will complete a writing task – ‘Inform, Explain, Describe. ’

Paper 2 -02
This externally assessed exam contains
Section A – students will answer on a set text from their Anthology regarding the
            writer’s craft.
Section B – students will answer two writing questions – ‘Argue, Persuade, Advise’
            and ‘Explore, Imagine, Entertain’.

Paper 3 – 03
Students will complete three speaking and listening tasks within their lessons.
These are internally assessed.

-Paired
-Group

These must cover the following skills
-explain, describe, narrate
-discuss, argue, persuade

2 hour 15 mins
Externally assessed exam
70% of grade

Unit 2:
1 hour 30 mins
Externally assessed exam
20% of grade

Unit 3:
Internally assessed
Each activity = 40 marks – total of 120 marks
10% of grade
