A2 Further Mathematics - Academic Pathway at Furze Platt Senior School
An Academic Pathway Subject - A level Further Mathematics is highly suitable for those students who have performed particularly well at Maths GCSE, enjoy the subject and are committed to learning new concepts. Students must also be studying A level Mathematics. Universities look upon Mathematics favourably and consider it to be excellent preparation for many courses and future careers.
A 2 year linear A Level course covering 50% Further Pure Mathematics and 50% Applied Mathematics.
The course further develops the ideas studied at A level and introduces new concepts. Half of the course is Pure Mathematics and half is made up of two equally weighted applied modules: Further Statistics 1; Further Mechanics 1 or Decision Maths 1.
An average of 5- 'Attainment 8' score (largely equivalent to 4 grade 4s and 4 grade 5s) across 8 highest GCSEs including English & a grade 7 in GCSE Maths
There will be four equally weighted written examinations at the end of Year 13, each 1 hr 30 min in duration – Further Pure 1; Further Pure 2 and 2 applied papers. Calculators can be used in all assessments.
Further Maths is highly regarded by universities and employers. Students who study Further Maths may go on to study degree courses in Mathematics, Economics, Accounting, Physics, Business Studies, Computer Sciences and Mechanical Engineering, to name just a few. Potential career opportunities are extremely widespread, from Business and Finance through to Therapy Professionals!
