Further Maths AS/A2 at West Coventry 6th Form (Woodlands Academy, Tile Hill Wood School, Westwood Academy)

Course description

You should follow this course if you are a really committed, enthusiastic mathematician. The course builds upon and extends the concepts in the A level Maths course, therefore it can only be taken in conjunction with the AS/A2 course. You must be very confident with your algebra skills and again you must be prepared to think! You will have to solve problems by drawing on a number of mathematical topics and be prepared to persevere with some lengthy solutions.

Course content

You will study 3 main areas of Mathematics • Further Pure Mathematics which will build upon and extend your knowledge of Core mathematics. It will introduce you to some new topics such as complex numbers, matrices and different forms of proof. • Statistics 2 which will build upon and extend your knowledge of Statistics 1, from A level Maths. Mechanics 2 which will again cross over into Physics, building upon Mechanics 1.

Entry requirements

You must study A level Maths and have a minimum grade A at GCSE.

Assessment

Year 12: 3 written papers of 1½ hours each on Further Pure 1, Decision 1 and Decision 2. Year 13: 3 written papers of 1½ hours each on Further Pure 2, Statistics 2 and Mechanics 2.

Future opportunities

Further Mathematics provides a big advantage to students intending to study Mathematics at university. It is also highly regarded by other subjects, as an indication of a very able student. You should be aware that subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Computing and all types of Engineering prefer you to have Further Mathematics and some of the more highly rated universities even require it.

Further information

You will probably be taught in a similar way to your GCSE course. There are aspects of teacher led work, textbook work and investigative work. Written homework tasks will usually be set after each session. In addition, a great deal of independent work is required to achieve good results and you will be expected to consult regularly with staff, both in and out of lessons.
