Personal Progress - Entry Level 1 Certificate LL - Starting Out at Harrow College
Students with learning difficulties or disabilities operating below Entry Level.
There will be a core of Communications, ICT and Numeracy with options such as Business Enterprise, Catering or Horticulture. The course is accredited by the ASDAN Personal Progress Certificate which provides an opportunity for the development and recognition of a range of personal and social skills that will help young people to develop themselves and prepare for life, employment and a positive role in the community.
Students will be operating at around Milestone 6 (see below) and show a willingness to participate in all aspects of the course.
Communication, receptive and expressive: At Milestone 6, the learner will attend to and respond about familiar topics, using words or AAC in a 1:1 or small group context; learners will be able to demonstrate that they are paying attention; to follow 3 key concepts; to initiate and maintain short conversations; and to ask simple questions. At this stage the learner will begin to use prepositions, pronouns and a wider range of communication and try to repair breakdowns in communication by repetition or by getting help.
Reading: At Milestone 6, the learner will recognise up to 5 words, symbols and/or images when following an account; understand that written words represent words or signs that can be spoken and/or signed; distinguish between words and other forms of AAC, track words in order; match objects and images to symbols and words; recognise a few letters of the alphabet and match letters and short words.
Writing: At Milestone 6, learners will demonstrate understanding that words have meaning. They will use words and/or symbols to communicate; trace or copy letter shapes; write in correct order and begin to write their own name.
There will be continual assessment of a portfolio of work which will be externally moderated.
