English Literature A Level *FEES PAYABLE* at Northampton High School

Course description

To study English Literature is to study the human condition; it is to discover the wonders and frailties of human nature and society throughout the ages. English literature is a rigorous academic subject designed to challenge and stimulate girls through close reading, lively discussion and the writing of formal essays. However, English Literature is also fun, sometimes controversial and hugely enriching. Nobody was ever made poorer through reading. The aim of this course is for girls to emerge at the end of A2 more confident, worldly and articulate, but also to foster a life-long love of literature.

Course content

The new A Level will be a linear two year course.

The A Level will have a 20% coursework component and two final examination papers.

Students will read a range of literature including prose, poetry and drama.

Students will answer a range of different style questions, including responses to unseen extracts and references to wider independent reading, as well as more traditional discursive essays on their set texts.

Entry requirements

A genuine interest in reading and literary analysis would be welcome as well as, preferably, an A or A* in English Language and English Literature.
