Music AS/A2 Level at Belfairs Academy

Course description

Year 12 students should be performing at grade 5/6 and year 13 at grade 6/7.

Candidates must play an instrument or sing well. They will also be required to have musical tuition (this can be arranged through the Academy and a cost will be incurred).

This subject can be taken with Music Technology but can also be combined with many other courses to produce an advanced course of study.

Course content

This course extends and builds on GCSE work and requires knowledge of music theory. Students will follow the Edexcel course and will study music, ranging from the great composers to the modern day and the course is made up of three core components:

1. Performing

2. Composing

3. Historical Studies and Harmony

Entry requirements

Music GCSE grade C or exceptional music ability if GCSE not studied.

ABRSM grade 5 Practical and Theory or equivalent experience/understanding

Assessment

The course is assessed through a performance, a composition and a written examination.
