A Level Physics at Theale Green School

Course description

Why study Physics?

To develop your interest in, and enthusiasm for physics, including developing an interest in further study and careers in physics. To appreciate how society makes decision about scientific issues and how the science contributes to the success of the economy and society.

To develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of Physics and how they relate to each other. Lessons will include theoretical and practical physics. Theoretical physics involves understanding scientific laws and definitions and the practical work investigates and tests these ideas, looking for mathematical relationships between variables. Time will also be spent looking at numerical problems and how to solve these using equations derived from the theory.

For assessment purposes, knowledge and understanding of key concepts are treated separately at AS; important links between different areas of physics are largely assessed synoptically at A2. While the teaching of practical skills may be integrated with the theoretical topics, they are assessed separately. There will be two written papers at both AS and A2 level and, internal assessment of practical skills at both AS and A2 level. Internal assessment of practical skills is based on completing OCR set tasks. Examinations are only available in June.
