A Level Further Mathematics at The Bishop of Winchester Academy

Course description

Further Mathematics is designed to broaden the mathematical experience for those where AS Mathematics is not enough!  Further Mathematics develops some of the concepts met in A Level Mathematics and brings it to a higher plain, providing more opportunity to see how mathematics is applied.  This subject needs to be studied in conjunction with Mathematics AS Level.

Course content

In the AS year, there are 3 units to study: Further Pure 1; Decision Mathematics 1; and Decision Mathematics 2.

In the A2 year, students study an additonal 3 units.  Students study Further Pure 2 and Further Pure 3, plus one more Statistics or Mechanics unit depending on your choice at AS. You could study Mechanics 1 or Statistics 1 in your second year if you have not already done so as part of your AS, or you could develop the Mechanics or Statistics knowledge covered in AS by studying Mecahnics 2 or Statistics 2.

Entry requirements

Students must meet the standard 6th Form entry requirements.  Students should preferably have an A grade (or above) in GCSE Mathematics, although those with a high B grade will be considered.

You will be assessed through unit examinations.

Future opportunities

Mathematics is highly regarded and provides strong support to any application for employment or further study. The applied units in Mechanics and Statistics are necessary for many courses in science, social sciences and engineering. The study of Pure Mathematics develops logical thinking and a systematic approach to problem solving – attributes which are highly valued in the workplace.
