Course content

Over the two year course you will cover six Biology modules:
B1 - Understanding Ourselves - topics included: Fit for Life, What's for Lunch? Keeping Healthy, Nervous System, Drugs, Genes.
B2 - Understanding Our Environment - topics included: Grouping Organisms, Food Chains, Adaptations, Survival of the Fittest, Population Control, Sustainability.
B3 - Living and Growing - topics included: Diffusion, Blood, Growing Up, Plant Growth, Cell Division
B4 - It's a green World - topics included: Water, Transport in Plants, Minerals, Energy Flow, Farming, Decay, Recycling.
B5 - The Living Body - topics included: The Heart, Breathing, Waste Disposal, Reproduction,
B6 - Beyond the Microscope - topics included: Bacteria and harmful Microbes, Biofuels, Life in Soil, Enzymes and Genetic Engineering.

Assessment

In Year 11, you will be assessed through three areas:
Biology B Unit 1 - Exam (B1, B2 and B3) 1 Hour (33.3 %) - January Year 11
Biology B Unit 2 - Exam (B4, B5 and B6) 1 Hour (33.3 %) - June Year 11
Biology B Unit 3 - 'Can Do' Tasks and 'Science in the News' assignment (33.3 %) - entered May/June Year 11

Future opportunities

The Separate Science option is ideal if you wish to study any of the three sciences at AS or A2 Level. It will give you a more in-depth of knowledge in each of the three disciplines and a better foundation for those wishing to pursue a career in Science.

Further information

The Biology GCSE is studied as part of the Separate Science Option, where you will be awarded three Science GCSE grades, one in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Modules B1 - B4, are common to the Science and Additional Science qualifications. Modules 5 and 6 are covered as additional units to achieve the Separate Biology GCSE. To ensure content of all modules is covered appropriately, an hour long extra-curricular 'Triple Science' lesson run each week, on a rotational basis with Chemistry and Physics.
