Physics A Level at Strode's College

Course description

Studying Physics gives you an opportunity to explore and understand the workings of the universe from things as small as quarks, to super massive black holes and galaxies. You learn about the many aspects of modern life (for example industry, medical treatment and communications) that are based on physical principles. You develop the numerical, analytical and practical skills of collecting and manipulating data, using the equipment in a modern physics laboratory. You also develop creative and innovative skills.

Course content

This is an ideal course to build on your experience from GCSE and extend your appreciation and knowledge of Physics. You will carry out practical work and explore the world from the nano scale to the cosmic.

Entry requirements

General entry requirements for a Level 3 Pathway including at least 5 A*-B GCSE grades. Plus a B in Double Science GCSE or a grade B in Physics and a B in Maths GCSE or equivalent. Maths (Mechanics) must be taken at A Level.


A total of six hours assessment split over three examination papers taken at the end of the two year course. The papers will provide the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of both theory and practical skills.

Financial information

Participation in Institute of Physics Olympiad. Thorpe Park visit, Particle Physics masterclass, talks from leading physicists.

Future opportunities

Physics is essential for any engineering career or degree and is highly desirable for other scientific or technical careers. Physics is also an advantageous subject for careers involving finance and business.
