Applied Science BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate at The Mirfield Free Grammar & Mirfield College

Course description

This course develops students’ scientific skills, knowledge and understanding and stretches them to apply these to a scientific setting. It will hone students’ cognitive and problem-solving skills, along with improving their ability to communicate effectively. The self-management and resilience required for this course will provide an excellent basis to enter higher education or employment. This challenging course covers in-depth aspects in biology, chemistry and physics. The variety of topics range from detailed cell structure to periodicity and properties of elements, as well as the use of waves in communication. Students will explore a range of practical chemistry techniques and deduce conclusions and evaluations from results they have independently produced.

Unit 8 - Physiology of Human Body Systems

Entry requirements

Grade 4 in GCSE English Language

Grade 4 in GCSE Mathematics, with Grade 4, 4 in GCSE Combined Science.

All units are equally weighted:

Unit 1 – Externally assessed examination

Unit 2 – Internally assessed coursework

Unit 3 – Externally assessed written task book

Unit 8 – Internally Assessed coursework

Financial information

16-19 Bursary Fund

This scheme was introduced by the Government to help students study. Contributions and payments ‘in kind’ have been made to students to help with their individual identified needs, such as:

   •   Travel

   •   Stationery costs and packs

   •   Books and revision guides

   •   Educational trips/residential trips

   •   University Open Day visit costs

   •   Employment/apprenticeship opportunities


Bursaries are available to students in the following categories:

Category One:

Students who are identified by the government at ‘most vulnerable’ will be eligible for a guaranteed bursary of £1,200.

Category Two:

Family income is below threshold for working tax credits/free school meals.

Category Three:

Students who have an extreme financial barrier, mitigating circumstances and/or a short-term specific educational or independent living cost.

Applications will be issued to students to return on Enrolment Day.

Future opportunities

This qualification carries UCAS points and can therefore be used alongside a range of both A Level and BTEC subjects. For example, taken alongside A Level in psychology and BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in sport to progress to sport psychology courses. It can also be used alongside the BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in health and social care to progress to nursing courses.

Further information

This course combines well for those students studying linear courses, as 44% is internally assessed portfolio and 66% is externally assessed. It is designed for learners who are interested in science, but can also apply knowledge to a practical application. It is aimed at students progressing to a wide range of higher education courses. Applied Science equates to one A Level.
