Course description

Unit 1 - Categorising Texts Assessment – Written Exam 1hr 30 mins Weighting – 60%

This unit covers the introductory aspects of the study of language and focuses on three specific social contexts: Language and Power, Language and Gender and Language and Technology.

Unit 2 - Creating Texts Assessment – Coursework Weighting – 40% Candidates are encouraged to develop their own writing skills, producing writing in different genres, for different audiences and purposes.

Unit 3 - Exploring Comparison and Production Assessment – Written Exam 2 hours Weighting 60% This unit has a detailed focus on two specific areas of language study: Child Language Acquisition and Language Change.

Unit 4 - Investigating Language Assessment – Coursework Weighting – 40% Candidates apply their knowledge of linguistic methods and concepts to an investigation of their choice.

Entry requirements

A* - C grades with a B grade in the applicant's chosen A level subjects for automatic entry. If an applicant attains C grades in the GCSE subjects they wish to study at A levels, entry is subject to a discussion with the Heads of Subject and Head of Sixth Form
