Physics A Level at Collingwood College

Course description

This is a rigorous and interesting course which will prepare you well for further study in Physics, Engineering and many other areas. You will develop a deep understanding of physical sciences including many abstract aspects requiring the manipulation of mathematical formulae.

Course content

1. Measurements and their errors
2. Particles and radiation
3. Waves
4. Mechanics and materials
5. Electricity
6. Further mechanics and thermal physics
7. Fields and their consequences
8. Nuclear physics
9. Optional Topic (Medical Physics, Astrophysics or Turning Points in Physics – all students will do the same topic, to be negotiated)

Entry requirements

Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade A*-C (or equivalent) including Grade B in Science, Additional Science and Mathematics. Experience shows that your chances of success are greater in this subject if you have a Grade B in English Language.


Paper 1: Written paper - 2 hours
Examining: Sections 1-5 and 6.1
Weighting: 34% of A level

Paper 2: Written paper - 2 hours
Examining: Sections 6.2, 7 and 8
Weighting: 34% of A level

Paper 3: Written paper - 2 hours
Examining: Practical skills, data analysis and section 9
Weighting: 32% of A level

Future opportunities

Degrees in Physics and Engineering are popular choices. Physics A level is also well regarded when seeking entry to many other options, including Accountancy, Law, Medicine and also other Sciences.
