Animal Management City & Guilds (NPTC) Extended Diploma Level 3 at Duchy College
This course is for anyone with sound academic ability who wishes to study a vocational qualification which is mostly theory-based with some practical input. The course allows you to gain a supervisory level qualification which will enhance your employability in the animal industry but will also allow progression to Higher Education.
Ideal if: you have a commitment to working with animals and sound academic ability with the desire to study a vocational alternative to A-levels.
You'll need: five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English, mathematics and science, or an equivalent qualification. You must also demonstrate a sound commitment to working with animals.
You'll learn: about animal health, feeding, animal handling and safe working, anatomy and physiology, animal biology, complete a research investigation project and work experience. Optional units may include welfare and breed development, exotic pet health and husbandry, and wildlife management and rehabilitation.
Expect: practical lessons delivered at our animal units and a weekly work experience placement as well as block weeks to gain key employability skills.

You'll go onto: employment within the animal industry, or university study such as our Foundation Degrees in Animal Health and Management, Animal Behaviour and Psychology or Veterinary Nursing
Attendance is three days per week over two years, during which time you will cover the following subject areas: animal health; accommodation; feeding; animal handling and safe working; anatomy and physiology; animal biology; research investigation project and work experience.
There are also some optional units which may include: animal behaviour and communication; welfare and breed development; business management; exotic pet health and husbandry; wildlife management and rehabilitation; animal training; nutrition and zoological animal health and husbandry.
Practical lessons are delivered at our excellent Animal Units on each site, with time being spent at Paradise Park for avian and zoo studies for students studying at our Rosewarne campus and at Dartmoor Zoological Park for those studying at our Stoke Climsland campus. You will be assessed via an ongoing series of written assignments and practical assessments and you will be required to undergo a period of at least 300 hours of work experience, either as day release or in blocks.
You must have 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above in English, Science and Maths, a good attendance record at school and demonstrate a sound commitment to working with animals. You may also be required to provide a reference from your school tutor or from your work place. You may also progress onto this course with a Level 2 Diploma in Animal Management (at Merit and Distinction level). For students aged 19+, your prior experience with animals and academic qualifications will be taken into consideration at interview.
This qualification is the equivalent of three A-levels and provides a sound entry route to Higher Education. You may wish to study at Foundation Degree or Degree level and there are a variety of these Higher Education courses available for progression at both Duchy College campuses. Also at Cornwall College Newquay, at Plymouth University and elsewhere at Universities out of the county. Alternatively you may progress into employment within the animal industry with the skills and knowledge to develop working at a supervisory level.
