Biology AS A2 at Weston Favell Academy
CORE PRINCIPLESBYB1Where you will study: Cell structure, biological molecules, enzymes, cell membranes & transport, and digestion. GENES & GENETIC ENGINEERINGBYB2You will cover the structure and function of DNA and the genetic code, the cell cycle, sexual reproduction and gene technology. PHYSIOLOGY & TRANSPORTBYB3You will study the mammalian transport system, mammalian heart & multicellular plants. Students will also perform a piece of coursework in Year 12. There are three further A2 units. These form the second half of a full A level qualification. ENERGY, CONTROL & CONTINUITYBYB4Where you will study respiration & photosynthesis, meiosis and genetics, classification, selection and evolution plus control, coordination & homeostasis. ENVIRONMENTBYB5Most of this module is completed during the field trip at a field centre in Shropshire. The content includes the cycling of energy and materials in the environment, and the dynamics of ecosystems. You will alsocomplete your A2 coursework during this topic. BEHAVIOUR & POPULATIONSBYB8The final module of the course covers patterns of behaviour, reproduction and pregnancy, plus human growth, development and health. This module has close links with some of the content of the Psychology A level.
If you studied this subject at GCSE/GNVQ you must have passed with at least a C, or GNVQ Merit, to start the AS Level. As with all A Levels you require a minimum of 5 GCSE passes, or equivalent, at C and above.
Modules are assessed at the end of each year. A2 papers contain a significant synoptic element. Coursework counts for approximately 15% of the final mark.
An A level in Biology can lead to an exciting career in medicine, biotechnology, microbiology forensic medicine, physiotherapy plus many others.
Any science or social science subject goes well with this subject, as does Maths and Geography.
