Media Studies A Level at Seven Kings School

Course description

The main aim of the course is to raise students’ awareness of themselves as media consumers, how media affects society and to empower students so they make the move from media consumer to media producer. 

Course content

Media Studies is a subject that explores:

  • how a range of media texts are effectively constructed
  • how audiences are targeted and how they respond to the texts
  • how new technology has challenged the traditional roles of both producers and audiences 

Entry requirements

In order to study 4 subjects at A Level you must have at least 5 A*-As in your GCSEs (A 7 or better counts as one of these)

In order to study 3 subjects at A Level and 1 subject at AS Level you must have at least 6 A*-Bs in your GCSEs (A 6 or better counts as one of these)

In order to study 3 subjects at A Level you must have at least 5 A*-Bs in your GCSEs (A 6 or better counts as one of these)

You must have as a minimum of a 5 or above in English Language and Maths

In order to study a subject at A Level you must have at least a grade B (or a 5) in the subject at GCSE:

To study Accounts you must have a at least a 5 in maths

To study Economics you must have a 5 or above in GCSE English Language

To study Maths you need a 7 in GCSE Maths.  Further Maths will be available to those students who have achieved an 8 at GCSE; if you take Further Maths you will also study an AS level in Maths in another option block, so this means 2 Maths AS levels

To study AS Music you need a Grade 5 in an instrument

To study PE you must have at least a B grade in Core Science

To study Psychology you must have at least 5 in English Language and a B Core Science

To study computer science you must have studied it t GCSE and obtained a B grade

To study 1 Science you must have at least a B grade in the subject chosen and additional science students need at least a B grade on average across the exam elements of their course

To study 2 or more Sciences you must have As in those subjects and combined science students will need As in those subjects chosen

To study Physics you also need a 6 or above in Maths

In order to study a subject you have not previously studied at GCSE you must have at least a 5 in English Language or at least a GCSE grade B in a humanity subject

Assessment

Students study for and are assessed in the following ways:

AS Media Studies

50% practical coursework portfolio (consisting of one preparation piece and a main production) and 50% exam:

Paper 1 unseen analysis of TV drama plus questions about representation of social groups, time and place.

Paper 2 discussion of one media institution.

A2 Media Studies

50% practical coursework folder and 50% exam:

Paper 1 linking critical theories to practical work

Paper 2 discussion of key media issues such as globalisation, identity and postmodernism Practical work will include use of digital video, FinalCut Pro editing software and green screens.

Where it leads

The course lays the groundwork for careers in journalism, film making, television and web design amongst others.
