Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair - Level 2 (Full-Time) at Newcastle College

Course description

This Programme of Study covers the basic technical needs for today’s motor vehicle repair industry.

It provides essential knowledge for service technicians working on light vehicles (cars and vans) in all types of garages, dealerships and maintenance depots.

The functional skills involved are those core elements of English, Mathematics that provide an individual with the essential knowledge, skills and understanding that will enable them to operate confidently, effectively and independently in life and at work in the Automotive Industry

This Programme of Study has been designed to prepare the Candidate for Employment within the Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Industry.

Course content

This is a Programme of Study which involves students studying both the theory and practical aspects of the following:

  • Light Vehicle Construction and Routine Maintenance
  • Operating Principles of Light Vehicle Engines, Tyres, Brakes, Steering and Suspension Systems
  •  Operating Principles and Maintenance of Light Vehicle Transmission Systems.

Students also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

Entry requirements

Candidates will be expected to be in possession of a level 1 automotive qualifacation


The student’s knowledge is assessed by practical assessments in an automotive workshop environment and by ‘on-line’ multiple-choice testing.

Future opportunities

By completing this qualification, candidates could be considered for entry to a Level 3 Maintenance and Repair Qualification.

Successful canditates could find employment in the automotive industry.
