Creative Media: Media Production BTEC level 3 at JFS

Course description

The BTEC in Creative Media offers the opportunity for students to develop practical production skills. You will gain experience of the planning, research and development skills which are essential for working in the media industries. You will develop skills and knowledge in pre-production; learn the camera and editing skills required for working for film and the writing skills for developing pitches and evaluating for finished products. You will learn how media products are consumed and how audiences interact with creative media products.

Course content

In the first year there are two mandatory units: Pre-Production Techniques for the Creative Industries and Communication Skills for Creative Media Production. These will be completed alongside understanding the Film and Television Industries and factual programme production techniques.

In the second year you will study one mandatory unit: Research Techniques for the Creative Media Industries alongside two additional units in Music Video Production and  Film Studies. In the second year you will continue to refine and develop your practical skills learnt during the first year, as well as develop your research and analysis skills

Entry requirements

The minimum requirement is at least a level 4 in English Language  and/or Literature as well as a keen interest in the practical application of Media Studies.

Assessment

This is a two year practical course. You will be expected to research, film, edit and manipulate images as well as demonstrate good communication skills throughout the course. You will also be expected to write and present reflective evaluations on the development of your research and evaluative skills.

Future opportunities

A BTEC in Creative Media will allow you to study degrees and other higher education courses in Media Production. Completing this course will also give you the opportunity to create a show-reel which can be used to demonstrate your capabilities to future employers or help you to progress on to University courses. You will also be able to study other courses linked to creative media such as Business, Marketing and ICT.
