Apprenticeship Children and Young People's Workforce Level 2 Certificate at County Training - Shropshire Council

Course description

This course is for those who are passionate about working with children and want to play a part in their social and practical development.  Job roles in the childcare sector are fulfilling and rewarding, often in a nursery or playgroup environment or even a youth club. Candidates doing this course could be working with children from birth, right through to 16 year olds.

The majority of your course will be delivered in the workplace. At the beginning you will meet your assessor who will visit you at work every 3 to 4 weeks. You will be required to attend an initial course induction at your local County Training Centre along with what’s known as a ‘literacy and numeracy diagnostic’ to assess your existing English and Maths skills. In addition you will need to attend a 20 week programme of workshops which will provide you with theory knowledge to help you in your day-to-day activities at work. There will also be some functional skills tests for you to complete as you move through your course.

The Level 2 is for those who are new to working in the childcare industry, with no or very little experience, and roles will often be at Assistant level.

Course content

Level 2 Certificate in Children and Young People's Workforce Intermediate Apprenticeship:

Candidates will work towards achieving the following:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Children and Young People's Workforce
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT
  • Paediatric First Aid Course – 12 hours of study
  • City and Guilds Level 2 Award in Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

Entry requirements

Before you can start this course, you will need to have a relevant paid work placement of at least 30 hours per week. There may be existing placements available or County Training can provide you with support to find a placement. This may be through an interview, some support with writing applications or preparing a CV, or even through work-experience placements.

Assessment

Before your course starts you will meet with your manager at work and your assessor to discuss which units of the qualification you will be working towards. These will be based on the kind of job role and day-to-day tasks you will be doing. Your assessor will then visit you on a regular basis to help collect evidence of the skills and knowledge you are gaining through one-to-one discussions, observations at work and witness testimonies from your manager – all of these activities will help you to build a portfolio demonstrating your ability for this area of work.

In addition, you will need to attend 20 college sessions on a weekly basis.

Financial information

For 16-18 year olds undertaking an Apprenticeship, training will be fully funded. A contribution of £250/ £350 may be required for individuals aged 19 and over depending on existing qualifications held.

Future opportunities

After completing a level 2 qualification in your childcare role, there will be a lot of opportunities for progression in your career. The Level 3 role may support you to work at management level with typical job roles including:

  • Nursery Supervisor
  • Nursery Teaching Assistant
