English Language A Level at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College

Course description

This varied and stimulating course aims to give you a deeper understanding of the language you use, abuse and generally take for granted every day.

Course content

Unit 1- Categorising Texts: Introduction to the study of language, focusing on three specific social contexts: Language and Power, Language and Gender, Language and Technology

Unit 2- Creating Texts Two pieces of original writing for different genres and for different audiences and purposes

Unit 3- Developing Language Builds on AS knowledge and skills, with an additional focus on two new areas of language study: Child Language Acquisition and Language Change.

Unit 4- Investigating Language Candidates produce two pieces: a language investigation and an informative media text.

Entry requirements

This course is for students who have at least a ā€˜Cā€™ grade in English or English Language at GCSE and who have an interest in furthering their understanding of words, communication and people. You need to have good skills in written English and an interest in developing these.
