Animal Care - NVQ 1 at Queensbury School

Course description

This course is offered by ‘Go Live’. Go-live is a programme of learning that allows students to study for a vocational qualification. Two days each week you will be out of school with a training provider and the remaining days will be in school working on other projects. The programme is for students aged 16-19.

Course content

This is a very practical course and is ideal for people who wish to work with animals. You will be taught all the necessary skills which will enable you to look after and care for a variety of domestic and farm animals.

To achieve the award candidates must complete five mandatory units which comprise:
  • Assisting with the movement and handling of animals
  • Assisting with animal feedstuffs
  • Maintain safe and effective working practices
  • Assisting with the care of animals
  • Assisting with animal accommodation

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry qualifications. All students are required to attend an interview prior tobeing accepted onto the course and will need to carry out a basic skills assessment.

What we are looking for are enthusiastic students who genuinely want to improve themselves. Academic ability, although important to all courses, is secondary to commitment and a willingness to work hard. This is a course that valuespractical skills and the ability to work with others in school and at an external training provider.

Assessment

The course is very practical,however each studentneeds to producea portfolio of evidencewith support from the teacher. The student will develop the skills and knowledge for caring and working with a variety of animals. Much of the practical learning is done outside, so students should be prepared for farm condition and be able to appreciate the variances of the weather.

The course is assessed through regular observations and practical assessments and you will have access to a one-to-one review of your learning plans when you will be given written feedback.

Future opportunities

This qualification leads onto NPTC Level 2 NVQ in Animal Care or the NPTC National Certificate in Animal Care. NVQs are nationally recognised qualifications which may enablelearners to find employment in the Animal Care industry. Prospective job opportunities include Assistance Dog Trainer, Kennel Worker or Zoo Keeper.
