Sport Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma at Blackburn College
This Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport is for someone who has a real passion for sport. There are 3 branches for you to choose from, depending on the vocational pathway that interests you:
Sports Development and Coaching - You will study a vocational sport programme equating to either 2 or 3 A-Levels, depending on your GCSE results, and gain additional qualifications in Sports Leadership and Coaching.
Sports Performance and Excellence - Elite performers may choose this route and could qualify for a college scholarship. There will also be enough flexibility within your timetable to fit in with your training demands
Sport and Exercise Science - If the analysis side of sport interests you, this route includes researching the psychological, biomechanical and physiological aspects, allowing you to specialise in the scientific characteristics that help improve sports performance.
The Level 3 qualifications cover a wide range of opportunities for you to develop within your chosen sporting field. You will investigate the marketing approaches of sports businesses as well as having the opportunity to lead coaching sessions. You will investigate the working of the body and how it adapts to various training programmes.
During your programme you will study areas such as:
- Fitness Testing for Sport
- Practical Team Sports
- Anatomy & Physiology in Sport
- Sports Nutrition
- Outdoor & Adventurous Activities
- Sports Coaching
- Sports Psychology
- Sport & Exercise Massage
- Sports Injuries
You will also complete leadership and coaching qualifications, participate in practical sports, undertake work experience within the sports sector, take part in numerous extra-curricular and represent the college in team and individual sports activities.
Usually a profile of Grade Cs at GCSE including Maths and English Language and a successful interview.
You will be assessed through 100% coursework.
Once you have completed your Level 3 Extended Diploma, you will be able to apply to a range of Universities. A triple distrinction in your Extended Diploma gives the same level of UCAS Tariff points as 3 As at A-Level. Many students progress to University Centre at Blackburn College where 9 out of 10 graduates are in work or further study just six months after graduation.
Particular courses students progress on to include: Community Coaching & Sports Development Foundation Degree FdSc, Sports Coaching & Performance Foundation Degree FdSc or Health & Personal Training Foundation Degree FdA. These can lead to varied and interesting roles in sport including:
- Sports Coach
- PE Teaching (following the completion of an appropriate PGCE)
- Sports Development Officer
- Sports Marketing/Advertising
- Performance Analysts.
