Mathematics A Level at Ralph Thoresby School
The course relates the ideas of Mathematics to the real world and captures the students’ interest with a lot of fascinating material. The course provides the opportunity to explore many of the concepts that have underpinned the maths they have taken for granted. Lessons draw on a multitude of skills, with each student engaging in discussion and application of knowledge. The course develops a real confidence in problem-solving and enables students to make links with the real world. Students who have completed either the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics or a similar qualification will almost certainly be positioned to engage in the course content effectively.
· A-Level Mathematics incorporates Core and Applied Modules.
· Four of the six modules (Core 1-4) draw on pure mathematical concepts such as Trigonometry, Algenra, Co-ordinate Geometry and Calculus.
· The remaining two modules are Applied with students taking 2 of the following options:
o Statistics 1 (Data handling, probability, correlation and regression)
o Mechanics 1 (Acceleration, force, friction and momentum)
o Decision 1 (Logic, algorithms and networks).
7+ GCSE Maths
The course is examined by six modular exams, one for each of the units taken.
All exams are taken in June. Three will be taken in year 12 and 3 will be taken in Year 13.
A-level Mathematics carries much status and is highly regarded by both employers and Universities. Mathematics is relevant to scientific, engineering, IT, management and professional careers. Employers respect it as a demanding course which promotes logical thinking.
